Getting started

What is Veritas?

Veritas is an app for learning the law of England and Wales and practising debating. It is free to use, with an optional Premium subscription. It explains the law for study: it is general information, not legal advice, and it may contain mistakes.

It is for anyone aged 13 or over. There are no public profiles, chats or leaderboards, and nothing you write is shown to other people.

Finding your way around

  • Home: your VQ and rank, your streak, and the way into Topic of the Day, Debate and Progress
  • Learn: law and debating skills, with Topics, Cases and Key terms, plus search and your saved items
  • Settings: reminders, theme, accessibility, help, and your data

Learn and practice

Using Learn

Choose an area of law, then work from "Start here" to "Advanced". Topics link to real cases and key terms: tap an underlined term to see what it means. Practise a topic or a whole area, try a timed test, flip through key-term flashcards, and add your own notes. Debating skills are in Learn too. On written law questions you can have 3 answers a day marked by AI, with feedback on each exam skill; after that you mark them yourself against the mark points. Stuck? "Ask about this topic" on any topic or case lets you ask the AI to explain it (3 questions a day free).

Practice, review and timed tests

Practise a single topic, a whole area, or a mixed set. Questions you get wrong, or mark yourself low on, come back sooner, and ones you know well come back later.

A timed test gives you 20 questions in 15 minutes, marked at the end with a rough grade guide. The grade is a guide only, not an official or exam-board grade.

Marking your written answers

For problem questions, essays and definitions, write your answer, then tap Show model answer. Tick each point on the checklist that your answer covered, and be strict. If you cover less than 70% of the points, the question comes back sooner so you can try again.

Exam technique

The exam technique guides

In Learn, at the bottom of Topics, Exam technique has four guides: command words, answering problem questions, writing evaluation essays, and using cases well. Each has a worked example and the common mistakes to avoid.

Under every written practice question there is a "How to answer" link with a quick reminder of the structure to use.

Debate

How a debate works

Pick a genre, difficulty and match length, read the briefing, choose a side and debate an opponent. Your opponent replies straight away (tap a reply to see it all at once), with no interruptions during the debate. At the end the judge gives a short speech to both sides, then announces the winner, with your scores and tips. Spotting and answering a flaw in what your opponent says counts for a lot. Argument scaffolds are available on Easy. You get 20 minutes of AI debate time a day. After that, the offline opponent is always available.

Topic of the Day

How the Topic of the Day works

A new motion every day. Read the brief, choose a side and write your argument. Then compare it with model answers, note what you would improve, predict your score and see how close you were. Once a day the AI marks it, picks out your best line and shows a stronger version of your weakest one.

There is one Topic of the Day each day, and a new one goes live the next day.

VQ, ranks and streaks

How VQ and ranks work

VQ (Veritas Quotient) is your reasoning score. It grows as you practise, and it decides your rank. The ring on the Home screen shows how close you are to the next rank.

Ways to earn VQ:

  • Complete the Topic of the Day
  • Finish a debate
  • Get a Learn question right for the first time
  • Spend time in Learn: 5 VQ for every 5 minutes, up to 30 a day, until you reach the Skilled rank

From the Skilled rank, getting something wrong costs the VQ that getting it right would earn: a Learn question you have not yet mastered, a debate you lose, or a Topic of the Day prediction more than 10 marks out.

Starter0 VQ
Learner200 VQ
Contender400 VQ
Skilled600 VQ
Advanced800 VQ

Streaks and streak freezes

Finish a Topic of the Day, a debate or a Learn practice session each day to build your streak. Missing a day resets it to zero, unless you have a streak freeze: tap your streak on Home to get one.

A streak freeze costs 50 VQ. You can hold one at a time, and if you miss a day it covers it automatically, so your streak carries on.

Reminders

Daily reminders

In Settings, under Notifications, you can turn on a daily reminder at a time you choose. If you have already studied that day, the reminder is skipped.

If reminders do not arrive, check that notifications are allowed for Veritas in your phone's settings.
