Who runs Veritas
Veritas is an independent student project run by Isaac E Williams, not a company. Isaac E Williams is responsible for how your information is handled (the "data controller" under UK data protection law).
The short version
If you create an account, your email address and a copy of your progress are kept on the Veritas server so you can get them back on any phone. Without an account, everything stays on your phone. There are no adverts, no tracking and no selling of data. Apart from your account, the only things you write that leave your phone are the AI features: the text of a Debate against the AI opponent, a Topic of the Day argument you have marked by the AI, a Learn answer you choose to have marked by the AI, and a question you ask the AI about a topic or case. If the app crashes, a technical crash report is sent so the problem can be fixed.
What is stored on your phone
Your chosen name; your VQ, streak and debate history (topics, stances, your arguments and scores); your Learn progress, bookmarks and personal notes; how long you have spent in the app today; and your settings. This is kept in the app's own storage on your device. Unless you have an account, we cannot see it. The offline Debate opponent also runs entirely on your phone.
Your account
Accounts are optional. If you create one, the Veritas server keeps: your email address; your password, stored only in a scrambled form (a hash) that cannot be turned back into the password; your name; and a copy of your progress (everything listed above except a few settings that belong to the phone, such as notifications and vibration), saved automatically so it can be restored when you log in on another phone. Your date of birth is only used to check your age and is never saved or sent. The server is run on Cloudflare, which stores the data securely for us. To verify your email or reset your password, your email address and a one-time code are sent through Resend, an email delivery service. Your email is used only for your account and these codes: never for marketing, and never shared or sold. When you are logged in, your daily AI allowances and Premium belong to your account (identified by a random account ID, not your email), so they follow you to any phone. Logging out removes your progress from the phone but keeps it in your account.
Debates and AI
When you debate the AI opponent, the topic, your stance and the messages in that match are sent over an encrypted connection to the Veritas server and on to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI model, so it can write replies, score the match and, if you ask for one, review it. Your name and other stored details are not sent. The Veritas server does not keep your messages. It uses a random ID made on your phone, not linked to your name, only to apply a fair daily limit on AI debate time. Anthropic handles the text under its own privacy policy (anthropic.com/legal/privacy) and does not use it to train its models by default.
Topic of the Day marking
When the AI marks your Topic of the Day argument, the motion, your side, your argument and the key points it is marked against are sent over an encrypted connection to the Veritas server and on to Anthropic, so it can mark it. Your name and other stored details are not sent, and the Veritas server does not keep your argument. The same random ID is used only to allow one AI marking a day. Anthropic handles the text under its own privacy policy and does not use it to train its models by default.
Learn answer marking
When you choose Mark with AI on a written Learn question, the question, its mark points and model answer, and your answer are sent over an encrypted connection to the Veritas server and on to Anthropic, so it can mark it. Your name and other stored details are not sent, and the Veritas server does not keep your answer. The same random ID is used only to count your AI marks for the day. Anthropic handles the text under its own privacy policy and does not use it to train its models by default.
Veritas Premium
If you subscribe to Premium, you pay through Apple or Google, so Veritas never sees your card or payment details. RevenueCat, a service that manages app subscriptions, receives a record of the purchase from Apple or Google with the app's random ID (or your account's random ID, if you are logged in), so the app and the Veritas server can tell that Premium is on. It does not receive your name or email address. RevenueCat handles this under its own privacy policy (revenuecat.com/privacy). Premium features such as the Skills report, mock exam results and your revision plans (including revision reminders) are worked out and kept on your phone.
Asking about a topic
When you ask the AI about a topic or case in Learn, your question, your last few questions and answers in that conversation, and the notes for that page are sent over an encrypted connection to the Veritas server and on to Anthropic, so it can answer. Your name and other stored details are not sent, and the conversation is not kept: closing it clears it. The same random ID is used only to count your questions for the day. Anthropic handles the text under its own privacy policy and does not use it to train its models by default.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or hits a serious error, it sends a crash report to Sentry, a service that helps developers fix bugs. The report contains technical details only: what went wrong in the code, the app version, your phone model and operating system version, and which parts of the app were open just before. It does not include your name, anything you have written, screenshots or your location. Reports are deleted automatically after no more than 90 days and are used only to fix problems. Sentry handles them under its own privacy policy (sentry.io/privacy).
Topic of the Day
To show the Topic of the Day, the app asks the Veritas server for that day's motion, which is chosen from news headlines. Nothing about you is sent with the request.
Support requests and feedback
If you use Contact Support or Send Feedback, your message (and device details, if you leave that ticked) is sent through the Veritas server and Resend, an email delivery service, to the support inbox, along with the app's random ID. If you add your email address, it is used only to reply to you. Messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with them, and are used only to answer you and improve the app.
Children and young people
Veritas is for anyone aged 13 or over. If you are under 13, please do not use it. There are no public profiles, chats or leaderboards, and nothing you write is shown to other users. An account needs only an email address and a password, and Veritas never contacts you except to send account codes.
How long data is kept
Data on your phone stays until you delete it. Settings > Data & Privacy > Delete all data removes everything from the phone, and uninstalling the app does the same. Your account and its saved progress are kept until you delete the account in Settings > Account > Delete account, which removes them from the Veritas server straight away. An account sign-up that is never verified is deleted after 7 days, and a phone is logged out after 180 days without being used.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask what information is held about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. You can view your progress in the app, and delete your data yourself at any time: on the phone in Settings > Data & Privacy, and your account in Settings > Account. For anything else, use Settings > Contact Support in the app, or email [email protected]. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, for example when a new feature sends data anywhere, the app will tell you before it happens.
